December, 2004

As a trend, as a friend, as an old memory

Feeling: Cheery

Happy Computer Day! Unfortunately, Best Buy's selection of processor fans was equal to their selection of heart worm medication. Why do I shop there again? Who knows. I did pick up a copy of the fifth seasons of the Simpsons though.

I beat two new songs in DDR last night. 25 songs left and 51 days to clear them. Things are looking up. I also got to have a lovely chat with a nice lady at a restaurant which made me happy.

I've added several new flags to the high resolution flags list. I've also added .ico format for those who like to put flags on their desktop.

Happy New Year to those who celebrate New Years on this date. I'll see everyone next year! HA! Oh that joke is so tired.

So please understand that I don't answer the phone

Feeling: Happy

Last night I hung out with Angel, and she brought me a gift that I really adore. An orange bandana! I kept looking for one, but I couldn't find one, and she got me one. How nice.

Tomorrow is Computer Day. I have to head out to Best Buy tonight to get Kendra a present.

Our ancient and powerful gurus have answered another question.

I've added a new section to the knowledge page. It's a collection of high resolution flags. It's rather empty now, but given time I'll have a huge assortment.

Do I look the same to you? 'Cause I don't feel so

Feeling: Happy

I cleared three more DDR songs including Dead End and Tsugaru. Only 27 left. I now have to beat one song every other day in order to accomplish my goal.

Visual Fox Pro 9 is out now! My programming language is looking better than ever.

I've added several new links to my knowledge page.

I've added three poster images to the Labyrinth page, added the last two DVD seasons to the Highlander page, and added the Ultimate Matrix and the Animatrix to The Matrix page.

Everything you do bears a will and a why and a wherefore

Feeling: Okay

Cleared a few more DDR songs. Only 30 left. I'm clearing songs that I never thought I'd ever be able to pass.

I hate having dreams about ex-girlfriends. They always ruin my morning.

I have a new, non-copyrighted, say no to furries graphic now. There is also a new one for lame looking foam hats.

Remember, December 31st is Computer Day. Don't forget to get your PC something special.

I recommend walking around naked in your living room...
Or just down the street

Feeling: Happy

Horary! Consummermas is over! No more annoyances until next year. People felt the need to buy me stuff again. I now own three new movies, High Fidelity, Star Wars 2, and Tommy Boy, and The Guinness Book of World Records, 2005.

I got into a bit of hot water this weekend with my Say No to furries graphic. Apparently, the image I used was stolen from a webcomic, and the author wasn't exactly pleased. I apologized, and the image has been deleted, but now I have to look for a new public domain furry picture to say no to.

I cleared up several new DDR songs, and I have only 33 songs left.

I also had the luxury of finding out how to break into my car. This particular joy occurred at around 7:00 PM outside in a snow bank while my car was running, with my keys locked inside. It wasn't very warm.

Here comes the sun... he dreamed

Feeling: Cold

Last night I cleared two more DDR songs; 37 songs left.

I've created a new major section to my web site called knowledge. Three guesses as to what it has in it. For now it's mostly just links to existing pages, but it also has links to interesting articles on the web, and when I find the time I'll put my own essays and reports in there as well.

Two days until Consummermas. Wow, I haven't been paying attention, and didn't even notice it. Not that it matters. I'm off until Monday so, until then.

For my life, still ahead, pity me

Feeling: Cold

Last night I picked up three new DDR songs and thus cleared every 8 footer in the game. Only the evil 9 and 10 footers remain. Which was a stupid thing to do when you have a headache. 39 songs left.

The book that I had ordered a week or so ago arrived last night. Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, hard cover of course. I started reading it last night, and it is quite different from the movie, yet still familiar. I also dug up the old movie trailer for the first Neverending Story movie, which is on that page.

The wire on my cigarette lighter power adapter for my CD player broke recently. I went to Radio Shack to buy a new one, and all of theirs put this horrible hissing noise through my speakers. They said the noise was from my lighter, but in reality they just couldn't get their junk to work, so they blamed my car. Anyway, after opening my old adapter, stripping and reconnecting the wires, putting in a new fuse, and hot gluing the sucker to death, I now have a working power adapter that doesn't make any hissing noises. In your face Radio Shack.

Though merry ain't in my vocabulary

Feeling: Cold

Happy winter solstice to all. I don't know what's so happy about it. It's rather cold, actually. And I have a sore throat and the sniffles. Boy, this day sucks.

I finished Christmas shopping last night. If you happen to think you're getting something from me, let me assure you, you're not.

My new glasses are finished, and I'm going to pick them up tonight. I'll look more smug and modern now. I'll also be playing DDR. Can you believe it? I haven't played DDR in over four days! What is this world coming to? I have to clear 1.45 songs a day if I want to beat every song before February 20th. I doubt it will happen, I'd have to beat Paranoia Survivor Max on Oni to get them all, and you know...

I've added a new pointless database entry for snail mail.

Do you have a big intellectual capacity,
But know that it alone does not equate wisdom?

Feeling: Contemplative

Over the weekend I got to hang out with Jessie and her family whom I haven't seen since last summer, which was cool (I also got to show-off my 1334 SMB3 skillz, which always rocks).

Tyler Abbot was nice enough to submit his MIDI sequence of Rent's La Vie Boheme which can be seen in the Rent page.

A fellow arcadian and also a web mistress have brought to my attention that Queen will be having Paul Rogers of Bad Company fame doing lead vocals on their upcoming tour. There is even a chance they might come to North America. I'm a little apprehensive about it really. First of all, John Deacon (the original bassist) has retired, and won't be there, and also, Paul Rogers? There is no way he can hit the notes that Freddie could.

I've added some more lyrics as well. 1,652 and counting. I also ditched the iframe and wrote a program to generate the list of songs which is so much cleaner. It needs a little more work, but it's looking good.

Tomorrow is the winter solstice, which marks the first day of winter (in the US) and the shortest day of the year for us in the Northern Hemisphere. For those of you who already have the winter blues, look on the bright side, after tomorrow, the days are only getting longer!

On this day in 1996, Carl Sagan died at 62. I still love watching the goofy talking astronomer's excellent television series Cosmos.

The new spotlighted item is the book Pattern Recognition. I recently read it, and thought it was very good.

It's so hard to remember these things

Feeling: Cheery

ARRRGH! Giant lizard attack!

Kendra has a beating heart once more and she is sittin' pretty. I think I'll get her an über-good heatsink just in case.

My car was in the shop last night, so no DDR. This puts a damper on my average, so I'll have to play extra hard tonight to make up for it. I got my car back today, and the dealership forgot to put the right amount of air in my tires, so they're all wonky.

I need to get my parents a Christmas present. I know, I know, "but Dean you don't buy anyone Christmas presents," and that's true, except for my parents. You see, I've been able to convince most of my friends not to buy me anything for Consumermas (except for a few of you stubborn ones) and this works out well for everyone. Nobody gets annoying crappy gifts that they have to pretend to like, no money is wasted, and the stores have less reason to become all annoying. My parents, on the other hand, just don't understand the concept of, "I don't want anything", and continually buy me stuff. Thus, I have to buy them something. Don't waste your breath trying to tell me that it's illogical, I'm very well aware of that.

Oh, look, can't you see how much your death means to me

Feeling: Happy

So I called Visa last night, and asked the new support person if I could setup a secondary shipping address, and she said of course! So now it's setup... again. What a bunch of idiots.

Kicked some more butt in DDR. I've now cleared every standard difficulty song in the game, only heavy and oni left. I now have 43 songs left to clear.

I received my Slytherin scarf in the mail last night, and I look like such a grown up while wearing it. And, hurrah! My new CPU arrived early! It just came in today!

Guru. Question. Answer. You know the drill. I've also updated my lyrics database. It's now up to 1,600 songs.

Duh, I work at Visa, I'm a moron

Feeling: Angry

After speaking with Visa for twenty minutes they inform me that they don't let you setup a different shipping address, even though they already have. Is the entire customer service staff a bunch of morons? I'm going to call again today to get a different operator and see if they know anything.

I also cleared some new songs on DDR including "Saint Go Marching" and "Rhythm and Police". My total remaining is 47, and if I want to clear every song in under a year, I have only 67 days left to clear them. I'm not entirely sure I will be able to do it, but I'll certainly try.

Return of the King Special Edition came out yesterday. I did some math and found out something interesting. For those of you who didn't think that The Lord of the Rings had anything to do with Satanism, just take a look. Fellowship, 208 minutes; Towers, 208 minutes; King, 250 minutes. Added together (208 + 208 + 250) = 666! See! LotR is EVIL! And by evil, I mean that it is 11 hours long. Try sitting through a marathon of that!

He took a duck in the face at 250 knots

Feeling: Annoyed

Per usual, Visa screwed up again and failed to properly notify a business that it's alright to ship to a secondary address. I've notified them twice of this problem, and they haven't fixed it. Perhaps I'm being too nice to them. This will push out my CPU another day. I really wish Visa would hire people who understand English. They can speak it, but they just don't understand it.

I finished reading Pattern Recognition last night. The book is really good, and I suggest it to pretty much everyone who likes to read. As such, I've created a Pattern Recognition page, as well as created a pointless database entry for Pattern Recognition and William Gibson.

I also made some quick updates to the moon page.

They tell you I'm difficult, and boy are they right

Feeling: Happy

My weekend was fun even sans computer. Saturday, Angel and I headed over to Grand Rapids to hang out with Nikia and Amanda. We went to do some indoor rock climbing. Wow, am I out of shape (which is odd, because I have more muscle mass than I've ever had) because I could only make it up about half the wall. Last year, I scaled it twice! Anyway, at the mall, lo and behold, Hot Topic had Queen shirts! I of course had to buy one. I also picked up an Aerosmith shirt. We then played the CSI board game, a solstice gift to me, not Christmas ;-), which was very fun.

Speaking of the solstice, December 21, 2004 at 7:42 A.M. is this year's winter solstice, the first day of winter, and the shortest day of the year.

On Sunday, Angel cooked me breakfast, and we watched Last of the Mohicans, which she had never seen before (the poor thing).

It's Monday the 13th! Beware!

There are five new images in the Zen images list.

I've ordered my new CPU. It's another AMD Athlon XP 3200. Hopefully, this one will last longer than eight months. It won't be here for four more days, so I'll we in the corner weeping until then.

Dean has got his work, They say Dean lives for his work
and Dean's in love with his work, Dean hides in his work

Feeling: Angry

Another night without a computer at my disposal. I'm going through withdraw symptoms, and it ain't pretty. Daddy needs his medicine! It looks like the problem is the AMD processor, and of course it's out of warranty. So, I'm out $150, and I'll probably be without a computer for around a week. How lame is that?

That lame IBM machine I was working on yesterday took me the rest of today to finish getting setup. Why do you suck so bad IBM? Can you please answer me that?

At least something good has happened. I've made a huge update to my Rent page. It has 25 new videos (borrowed from the official site) as well as a much more roomy design and cleaner code. There is now a section dedicated to the Rent movie that's due out 2005.

Why must I be cursed with a love for computers?

Feeling: Annoyed

I booted up Kendra last night and ten seconds into it, she freezes. I reboot, and she freezes again. I swapped hard drives, video cards, with no avail, so I brought my memory to work to test it and it seems to work fine as well. I really don't want to have to get a new processor, that would really suck.

I've done some work on the OSI related pages in the pointless database, and I also added several new pictures of Richard Garriott.

Today has been a long waste of time. I had to totally reload a client from the ground up, losing all of their data because of a dumb user. After that I had to wrestle with IBM's crap AS/400 software. Argh, how I hate old incompatible junk.

For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins

Feeling: Happy

Hanging out with Dave was fun as usual, we played some Magic at the Fortress and talked computers and psychology. Good times.

At 4:30 AM this morning I was awoken from a bad dream where someone had broken my guitar. The dream was so vivid that I actually thought my guitar was broken and I got up in the dark and went into my living room to make sure it was intact. It's still fine.

I ordered an unofficial Slytherin scarf today. I think it'll go nicely with my leather trench coat which doesn't cover the neck very well.

There is a new addition to the pointless database. Chuckles of Ultima fame, has been added.

Still your memory's clear, always here, deep inside my heart

Feeling: Loved

Last night I showed DDR who's boss and cleared several new songs while getting a AA on Freckles, my first AA in heavy mode! I have 51 songs left to clear until I've done them all.

As you all may know, I force my team of gurus to answer questions lest I smite them. Anyway, they've cranked out another one today which can be seen on the Ask A Guru page.

I've been rambling again.

I'm wishing David O. a happy birthday. I'm heading over to East Lansing to hang out with him for the evening.

And if I play the same three chords

Feeling: Happy

I had a nice long weekend. I was hoping to spend it with Kimberly, but alas she had to work. Well, even with being home I was able to do some fun stuff. I have only a mere 54 songs left to clear in DDR. I picked up a 100 pack and 50 pack of CD-R and DVD-R respectively. I did laundry. I spent two hours in a book store and never bought anything.

I also ordered some new glasses. My old frames have been with me since 1998 and have since become warped so much that I could really use a new pair. I hate having to bend them back into place every few days. My new ones are a bit more modern looking as well.

I had a dream this morning about a small brown bear breaking into my house and eating and destroying everything despite my attempts to keep him out.

I've created a new graphic piece called Pastel Carpet that's in the art page.

Today is the 236th birthday of the Encyclopædia Britannica. Let's all show our respects to the book that we all read for fun.

November has been moved to the old news page.

Thank you disillusionment

Feeling: Happy

I had a weird dream this morning that involved driving down a road along side a huge lake. I've had this dream before (at least I think I have). Anyway, I'm driving down this highway and a girl I know who is driving an SUV shouts to me as I'm driving. For some reason I'm compelled to chase after her. We start driving very fast and weaving in and out of traffic. Up ahead is a sharp turn, and make the turn just barely, but for some reason this time, I run off the road and smash into a sand dune on the beach. Yep, that's it.

This weekend I'm heading out to Battle Creek to visit Kimberly whom I haven't seen in several moons. We can finally catch up on what's been going down.

Today is both payday and Christmas bonus day. Lots of money for me, and I don't even have to waste it on presents. Speaking of presents, if you're one of those crazy people who is wondering if I'll be buying them a gift, and then they in turn should also buy me one lest they feel bad, don't do it. I don't want any obligatory gifts, as such, you won't be getting any from me. If you've already bought me something, look on the bright side, return lines aren't very long yet. Yes, I'm a Scrooge, bah humbug, and all that jazz.

I just found out that there is going to be a Phantom of the Opera movie coming out December 22nd.

That's okay man 'cause I like the abuse

Feeling: Happy

More DDR last night, cleared new songs, yada yada yada. 55 songs left until I've beaten them all.

I seem to have a lot of dreams about fireworks. I had one again this morning involving drunk rednecks and bottle rockets. I felt safe.

89 years ago this day Albert Einstein published his theory of General Relativity and changed how we look at the universe forever.

I've currently beaten 143 different games in Freecell.

You can get anything you want at Alice's restaurant

Feeling: Okay

I wasn't able to clear a real 10 footer yet. I thought there were more, but there are only about six of them to choose from. I currently have a mere 58 songs left to pass in DDR before I can claim to have beaten every Extreme song. Most are 9's, with a few 8's and 10's left.

I've added 26 new images to the Harry Potter movies page.

There are some new international city names added to the unusual city names page.
