In 1982 Ridley Scott converted Philp K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" into the movie "Blade Runner". There are many changes from the book to the movie, most of which make the movie much darker and exciting. The movie takes place on a futuristic Earth where androids (called replicants) that are nearly indistinguishable from humans are commonplace. Although the replicants are usually forced to work in space they occasionally sneak their way to Earth. Harrison Ford plays Rick Deckard, a retired blade runner (bounty hunter of replicants) who is called back into action in order to stop a particularly dangerous replicant and "retire" him (that is, kill him).

The movie has a wonderfully dirty vision of the future with issues involving social class, globalization, artificial intelligence, and biomechanical engineering. There are currently three versions of the film (with a fourth on the way). The original 1982 theatrical release went over budget in development and was altered in order to speed up production. It has a simpler happy ending which doesn't make sense. The 1992 director's cut has some added footage and a more open ending which was much more interesting and more believable, however, it too wasn't what Ridley Scott envisioned. In 2006 they released a limited edition director's cut which was just a remastered version of the 1992 release. The final version being re-cut by Ridley Scott will come out in theatres in 2007 and be released on a special edition DVD with all four versions available.

When the Blade Runner movie came out in 1982 Philp K. Dick's original book was reprinted with the name Blade Runner. Also, three follow-up novels were written by K.W. Jeter. In addition a comic book was published by Marvel Comics and a popular computer game by Westwood Studios.
