Narnia

Last Updated: 2006/05/10

Narnia is a world very distant to ours in a completely different universe. There are magical ways to reach Narnia from our world, but those ways are very secret and hidden. Narnia's passage of time is on a different level from ours, so when a day passes here, several years may pass there. The world is vast and magical, and created by the greatest creature of all, the Lion named Aslan.

The Narnia series which was written and conceived by Clive Staples Lewis and was first seen in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", published in 1950. Through the course of his life, C.S. Lewis would continue to write more books for the series which all take place in the world of Narnia. A total of seven books were written and compiled into the Chronicles of Narnia.

Here is a list of all the books in the Narnia Series.

Publication Order Chronological Order
1950 - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe 1 - The Magician's Nephew
1951 - Prince Caspian 2 - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
1952 - The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 3 - A Horse and His Boy
1953 - The Silver Chair 4 - Prince Caspian
1954 - The Horse And His Boy 5 - The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
1955 - The Magicians Nephew 6 - The Silver Chair
1956 - The Last Battle 7 - The Last Battle

Although you can read the Narnia Chronicles in any order you wish, you will find it makes much more sense to read the books in chronological order. Most purists prefer to read the books in the published order, which will create many strange questions to come to light that won't get answered until nearly the end of the series. C.S. Lewis however, preferred the chronological approach, which is how the chronicles are now published (I also prefer chronological order.)

The Narnia stories are very allegorical in nature. There are several metaphors as well, the most obvious being that the Lion Aslan is like Jesus. The stories also carry moral values that are directly related to Christian teachings including making references to Adam and Eve. For the most part the books aren't too preachy, and you can enjoy them regardless of your religious background.

The world of Narnia is filled with Talking Beasts, which are similar to their normal counterparts only larger and much smarter. The world of Narnia also has many other facinating creatures including giants, dryads, fauns, satyrs, dwarves, monopods, unicorns, werewolves, and marsh-wiggles. Some of these creatures are kind and good people, others are harsh and selfish. Each has their own traits and characteristics. For the most part the characters are either good or evil, there are only a few creatures that show both good and evil traits.
