ASCII Entertainment's final logo.

ASCII Entertainment Software, Inc. was the American publishing arm of ASCII Corporation which existed from 1991-1999. During that time they published a variety of video games and video game controllers in America.

The origins of ASCII Entertainment Software seem to exist with a partnership between ASCII Corporation and the American publisher, Nexoft. ASCII was publishing some of their Game Boy and Nintendo Entertainment System games in the USA through Nexoft, but, around 1991, it appears that ASCII bought Nexoft and changed their name to Asciiware. Asciiware published a handful of games and hardware between 1991 and 1995, then, in 1996, the company name was changed to ASCII Entertainment Software. They published another dozen or so games until, in 1999, they were spun-off into Agetec, an independent publisher who continued publishing ASCII games, but also games from a variety of other companies.

Personal

I wasn't interested in any ASCII Entertainment games growing up, but I did know the name Asciiware because of their controllers. My family got the NES Advantage in the late 1980s, and my friends of mine owned the Super Advantage and AsciiPad. I never really found any of these controllers to be superior to the stock controllers, but I really liked the idea of them.
