CDex
CDex is an open source audio CD ripper primarily written in C++ which uses an unobtrusive nagware model.
Native audio output formats include: AAC, APE, FLAC, MP2, MP3, MPC, OGG, VQF, WAV, and WMA.
CDex used to use Free DB to get CD information, but the site is now defunct. You can replace the site with Gnu DB. The instructions are here.
Personal
This has been my go-to CD ripper for years now. I don't use it much anymore since I rarely buy audio CDs, but it's still a great way to get a high-quality purely digital version of your aging CD collection.
Review
Good
- It has a no-nonsense interface.
- It supports ripping into several formats, most importantly, FLAC.
- It has support for online CDDB for easy tagging.
- It has pretty good jitter correction, and was able to salvage songs that my audio CD player couldn't read.
Bad
- When selecting the meta tag for genre, you're forced to pick from their pre-defined list. So, unless you have basic taste, you'll have to fix the tag after the rip.
Ugly
- Nothing.
