Calvin and Hobbes was a comic strip created by Bill Watterson. That was syndicated from 1985-11-18 - 1995-12-31. The strip was about an overly-creative boy named Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes. The strip's gimmick was that Calvin sees Hobbes as a real-life tiger and Hobbes is always drawn in a different style when the two are alone. Although the strip is humorous in nature, it has a variety of deeper messages including parenting, death, religion, the public education system, and environmentalism.
Contents
Personal
My mother introduced me to Calvin and Hobbes when I was around seven-years-old, and, after seeing that I loved the strip, bought me a copy of Something Under the Bed Is Drooling. From there, I would continue to read the comic in the newspaper, and she would buy me a new book every so often. I really grew to love the strip and it became my favorite for the entire time it was published. Many of Watterson's strips really resonate with me at an emotional level. I was very upset when I learned that Watterson retired the strip.
Works
Bill Watterson was very firm in the fact that he wanted Calvin and Hobbes to exist solely as a comic strip, so there aren't any other forms of licensed media for the strip other than the strip itself, now catalogued in book form.
