# Cellular automaton

A **cellular automaton** is an artificial object that behaves according to a basic set of rules inside a cell-based universe. The study of cellular automata is used in many academic realms to better understand how tiny objects like atoms, molecules, and bacteria can interact with each other to create larger scale structure called emergence and has uncovered many parallels with naturally occurring phenomena.
