David Robert Jones (1947-01-08 - 2016-01-10), known professionally as David Bowie, was an English musician and actor. As a musician, he composed music, wrote lyrics, sung, and played various instruments. He spanned several musical genres throughout his career, but primarily focused on different forms of rock music, mostly glam rock and art rock. True to those subgenres, Bowie was especially fashionable making his personal look and visual stage performances a large part of his appeal.
David Bowie frequently appeared on the various radio stations I listened to in my childhood, and I remember seeing him in the film Labyrinth in the late 1980s. I also remember hearing him in Queen's Under Pressure in my late teens. My high school girlfriend really like him, and she bought a compilation album of his, which increased my awareness. However, I didn't become really interested in his music until I was in my early-20s when my friend Sarah, who was a huge fan, began letting me borrow some of her albums and show me some of the films he was in. After that, I began to follow Bowie a little more closely and we went to see him perform at the Area2 festival on 2002-08-06. Like many people, I was surprised when he died in 2016 of liver cancer, only two days after the release of Blackstar, having successfully kept his illness secret.
