Freecell from Entertainment Pack 2.

Microsoft's Freecell is a video game version of the card game freecell. The game was originally released in the Entertainment Pack 2 in 1991, but has been included for free with every version of Windows since Windows 95.

Status

I own most versions of Windows, and likewise, own most versions of Microsoft's Freecell. I have beaten many different games.

Review

  • Overall: 3/10
  • Best Version: Windows 7

— This section contains spoilers! —

Good

  • The game is a nice bare-bones freecell game.
  • The ability to change the card back is a nice feature, although, the early versions of the game only had terrible card art to choose from.

Bad

  • The early versions of the game were multimedia-challenged, using the default 16-color Windows palette, palette and lacking sound and music.
  • The early versions of the game didn't have as nice an interface as later releases.
  • Of the original 32,000 possible games, game number 11,982 is unwinnable. In the Windows Vista upgrade, which expands to 1,000,000 possible games, seven others are known to be unwinnable. This isn't so much a flaw in the video game, so much as the card game itself, but it would have been nice if the designers eliminated unwinnable deals.

Ugly

  • Nothing.

Games Beaten

I've checked and, impressively, Microsoft uses a compatible algorithm for generating games from the first version of Freecell to the Windows 7 version. The following are the game seed numbers that I have recorded and have won:
