FunPack is a compilation video game of seven games published by WayForward Technologies for Windows 3 in 1992. It was the first in the FunPack series. The game was originally released on a 3.5" or 5.25" floppy disk, but, in 1993, a CD-ROM version was released under a different publisher.

The various games were made by a variety of developers and included the following:

Title Game Type Developer
Blitzer Scrolling shooter Steve Sherman
Block Breaker Breakout clone Yutaka Emura
Chomp Pac-Man clone Jerry Shekhel
Emlith Tetris clone Yutaka Emura
Hyperoid Asteroids clone Hutchins Software
Jewel Thief Original ServantWare
Warheads for Windows Missile Command clone Brian Lowe, Eric Steadle

The CD-ROM re-release was published by WizardWorks Group which replaced Jewel Thief with Squash! developed by The Wiz Kids, although the box art still listed Jewel Thief.

On the days before the end of 8th grade, a friend of mine was talking about his copy of FunPack. He spoke highly of the games, especially Block Breaker, which intrigued me and I asked him to lend me the game. One day before the last day of school, he gave me his disk and I took it home and installed it. I was a bit disappointed by the games, as most of them were just clones of games I was already bored with. I ended up forgetting his disk in my computer and, when I saw him on the last day of school and he asked for the disk, I was really embarrassed. He ended up having his parents drive him over to my house the next day to pick up the disk, and I felt really bad because the circumstance made it look like I was trying to steal the disk from him. The only game that is unique, which was also the only game I was interested in, was Jewel Thief, just because it was so unique. It's also the only game that is winnable.

Best Version: Windows 3

— This section contains spoilers! —

Good

  • Although most of the games are clones of older games, it's nice to have them on the Windows platform.
  • A couple of the games support display sizes beyond 640x480 resolution, which is always nice.
  • Yutaka Emura's games have a lot of customization options.

Bad

  • None of the games were impressive in 1992 at a time when many kids had an SNES.
  • All of the games lack music.
  • None of the games support two players.
  • Chomp! doesn't have a frame limiter. Instead, you're supposed to manually set a delay in its settings.

Ugly

  • There isn't anything severely wrong with this package, it just isn't that good.

Box Art

I can't find a copy of the diskette box, but I assume it's similar to the CD release since the back of the CD release has a screenshot for Jewel Thief.
