Garfield and His Nine Lives is a platformer video game developed by Lucky Jump Games and published by The Game Factory for Game Boy Advance on 2006-05-05 and is part of the Garfield series.

In the game's story, Garfield has eaten too much food and has nightmares. In the nightmares, you control Garfield and you must make your way safely through nine stages full of monsters and hazards. Each is filled with 100 food items of a specific type for you to collect and Garfield's teddy bear Pooky, and several end with a boss fight.

Despite the similar titles, this game has nothing to do with the book Garfield: His 9 Lives or the TV special. In fact, the game makes no allusions to Garfield living through multiple lives or the figure of speech that cats have nine lives. A better title would have been "Garfield's Nightmare," and the same publisher did end up releasing such a game for the Nintendo DS a year later.

Won?Yes. But missing some items.

I played this game just to increase my familiarity with the Game Boy Advance catalog. I beat it, but not with all items found.

Best Version: Game Boy Advance

— This section contains spoilers! —

  • The pixel art is pretty good and Garfield is well-animated.
  • Although none of it stands out, the music is decent enough and fitting to the game.
  • I like that the game gives unlimited continues.

  • The Garfield universe has a wealth of characters, but the game makes almost no use of them. One stage takes place on the Arbuckle farm, but none of the family is present, not even Jon! Garfield, Odie, and Pooky are the only in-universe characters in the entire game.
  • Collecting 100 food items and finding Pooky in each stage is kind of pointless. It only contributes to your score and doesn't award anything extra, even if you get them all for every stage. And, the idea of Garfield trying to amass food doesn't really fit with the game's story, since too much food is what caused him to have nightmares in the first place.
  • In some maps, there are blind falls into hazards which are poor map design.

  • I know the game was created for kids, but I found it to be far too easy. Had I played this when I was eight-years-old, I still would have had little trouble beating it. In one stage, you can run along the bottom for the whole stage to bypass nearly all of the stage's hazards. Also, some of the stages award a free life early in, making it pretty much impossible to get a game over on them. Except for some of the later bosses (which require the player to learn a pattern), the game is a cinch. It would have been nice if the game incorporated a difficulty setting.
  • There isn't that much to do in the game. The GBA had a lot of horsepower, and this game doesn't take advantage of any of it. There are no power-ups or upgrades, no side-kicks, there isn't even an ending scene. This is very much an 8-bit game on 2006 hardware and I found it to be very forgettable.

Box Art

All regions used this cover, just with variations on the subtitle. Garfield is prominent, but it looks like a collection of unrelated drawings, and it doesn't convey the game's style or content.
