The title of the book, and the layout of the chapters, are based on a line from the opening of The God Delusion, written by Richard Dawkins, where he describes the god of the old testament as being, "...arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." Being a fan of some of Barker's previous books, I had access to this one in the form of an audio book and I listened to the Dan Barker recording, finishing it on 2021-05-01.
Status
I don't own this book, but I've listened to the audio book recording read by the author.
Review
Good
- There are a lot of interesting bits of wisdom to glean from this book. An early one that I was surprised I didn't know was the artificial origin of the title of the Abrahamic god Yahweh, the pro-abortion and child-murder passages, the pro-rape passages, etc.
- This book works well as a go-to guide for finding all the most abhorrent verses of the bible. And, since it is so thorough, you'll certainly see stories you have never read, or completely forgot about.
Bad
- Because it quotes so heavily from the bible, reading it cover-to-cover takes an especially long time and can be quite dull. It works much better as a reference book.
Ugly
- Nothing.
