I Thought You Said Summer Is Going To Take The Pain Away is an indie pop song by Hello Saferide first published as track 4 on Introducing... Hello Saferide.

The lyrics and music was composed by Annika Norlin. On the album recording, Norlin sings lead and backup vocals and plays acoustic guitar, Andreas Söderlund plays electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, and harmonium, Christian Gabel plays drums, and Ludwig Bell sings backing vocals.

Personal

I heard this song after getting Introducing... Hello Saferide. I don't remember if I immediately loved it, but it didn't take long before it became my favorite song on the album. The main character of the song (it sounds autobiographical, but who knows?) has had a shitty winter of physical pain and the loss of a loved one which has resulted in a months-long depression. Someone she adores (perhaps the person who died?) explained to her that things will become better once summer comes and the weather turns nice. However, when summer does arrive, and the sky is blue and her friends take her to the lake, she discovers she's still depressed. Her depression, it seems, comes from the same problems as before, she misses her lover and she doesn't feel like any of her friends understand her or even want to try, and those things can't be fixed by a mere change of seasons. As far as the music is concerned, I love the lonely electric guitar throughout the song and the crescendo after the second verse. I also appreciate the duet between the singers with Annika singing in first person perspective and Ludwig singing to her almost as a spirit in second person. As usual, Annika's vocals have a soft melancholy sound which fits the song's theme perfectly.

Lyrics

Finally, the sky is blue.
Last night, my friends dragged me to some lake.
We drove there real late, we went too fast,
Sipping cheap sangria in the backseat.
Everybody are laughing,
And we are listening to our favorite songs.
But I thought you said,
"Summer's gonna to take the pain away."

January brought a headache,
in February, it got even worse.
And when you thought it couldn't get more awful,
Say hello to March.
April brought me to a funeral,
Gained another ten pounds in May.
But I thought you said,
"Summer's gonna to take the pain away."

Have you ever had the feeling,
That no one really knows what you're all about,
And when you try to show them,
They all have things to do tonight?
Tonight.

Up on a roof, looking over the city,
All by myself thinking,
"There is nowhere I would rather be than here,"
So why am I not like the others,
And why are you not here with me doing crossword puzzles?
Saying, "It's going to be okay,
Summer's gonna to take the pain away."
When I'm gone, I promise,
"It's going to be okay,
Summer is gonna to take the pain away."

Have you ever had the feeling,
That no one really knows what you're all about,
And when you try to show them,
They all have things to do tonight?
Tonight?

Finally, the sky is blue.
Last night, my friends dragged me to some lake.
