Indie pop
Indie pop, short for "independent popular," is a music genre which combines independent publication with simple and melodic popular rock music. The genre got its start in the late 1970s when new bands, inspired by the growing independence of the British post-punk movement, applied it to their new style of guitar pop music resulting in songs that, while they still had pop sensibilities, were allowed the creative freedom to move in different directions. Despite the similarities in genre names, indie rock actually has a significantly different origin, however, no doubt due to their similar names, the genres have kind of merged over time with indie pop being often viewed as a more consumable, less abrasive form of indie rock.
Early indie pop artists include The Smiths, Felt, and The Go-Betweens.
Genres related to of indie pop include twee pop, shibuya-kei, chamber pop, and, more recently, indie rock.

Personal
By the time I became aware of indie pop, it had gained prominence in television shows and movies, so it was quite different from it's roots. A friend of mine introduced me to Rilo Kiley in to early 2000s which caused me to look into various other artists signed to Saddle Creek. While I tended to prefer indie rock, I still found several other indie pop bands that I liked.
Because neither "pop" nor "indie" are specific enough to give any concrete details about the genre of the music, I dislike the name.
