Kyatto Ninden Teyandee is a platformer video game developed and published by Tecmo for the Famicom on 1991-07-19. The game is based on the anime of the same name (which would be reworked in the USA as Samurai Pizza Cats). You control the Secret Ninja Team Nyankii, a trio of Animaloids (android animals) who are trying to protect the land of Edoropolis from Prime Minister Kitsunezuka Ko'on no Kami who is trying to usurp the current Shogun. The game is broken up into several stages, each with a boss at the end. You choose one of the Nyankii, each with a slightly different attack set, at the beginning of each stage to fight your way through it.

* The controls are really good. The characters are responsive and easy to maneuver. I liked being able to switch between the various characters with their special abilities.

Famicom cover.

Kyatto Ninden Teyandee is a platformer video game developed and published by Tecmo for the Famicom on 1991-07-19. The game is based on the anime of the same name (which was later reworked in the USA as Samurai Pizza Cats). You control the Secret Ninja Team Nyankii, a trio of Animaloids (android animals) who are trying to protect the land of Edoropolis from Prime Minister Kitsunezuka Ko'on no Kami who is trying to usurp the current Shogun. The game is broken up into several stages and you must choose one of the three primary Nyankiis to use, each with their own slightly different attack set, and make you way to the boss.

I found this game while searching for the best Famicom-only releases. I tried it out and enjoyed it right away, so I played a fan-made English translation and beat it on 2019-12-01.

— This section contains spoilers! —

Good

 • The game is a lot of fun; it feels like you're taking an interactive part in an anime. It's clear the game was made for children, but the cut scenes are still enjoyable and funny. It's rare to see a good licensed game, and this is fun even if you're unfamiliar with the source material.
 • The controls are really good. The characters are responsive and easy to maneuver. I liked being able to switch between the various characters with their special abilities.
 • The game has fantastic graphics. The characters are drawn accurately to the anime, the backgrounds are beautiful, and the art has a wonderful comic book style, just look at the characters feet when they run! I especially love the dancing background tiles behind many of the characters during the cut scenes.
 • The character design for the enemies is wonderful. They are all creative and strange.
 • The music, composed by Ryuichi Nitta, is upbeat and has an ancient Japanese sound which is very fitting for the game. It's also has a lot of tracks and includes an well-made instrumental of the anime's title music.
 • There are a lot of hidden power-ups if you take the time to explore the maps.
 • The red sun background of stage 4 was a nice nod to Rygar.

Bad

 • The game is a bit too easy; on my very first attempt, I beat the entire game and only died once. The easiness is caused in part by the slowness of the enemies, the ability to hit enemy projectiles out of the air, and the frequent health and power-up replenishments. Even if you don't try to find the hidden power-ups and rush straight to the boss, you'll have little difficulty beating the game.
 • On the rare chance that you do die, you're forced to restart the entire level from the beginning. I would prefer a harder game with check points.
 • No warning is made for when you're about to encounter a boss. When you reach their location, the screen fades to black and you fight them. If you wanted to explore the stage more, you just have to know where they are and avoid them. And, what is quite unusual for a game of this style, a couple of that stages have multiple locations that trigger the boss fight!
 • The Nyankiis aren't evenly balanced. I found Yattarou to be the superior character over Pururun and Sukashii since his attack is both fast and decent ranged.
 • The enemies are reused a bit too much throughout the stages. I would have liked just a bit more variety.
 • Considering how easy the game is, a hard mode would be a nice addition.
