List of required reading
This is a list of books that are not necessarily my favorites, but I think they are so important, I believe everyone should read them.
Fiction
- Animal Farm - A fable about revolution and fascism and how people tend to become corrupt.
- Epic of Gilgamesh - While the story itself is quite dull, it is effectively the earliest example of a human story and provides insight into our shared culture.
- The Handmaid's Tale - A frightening look at what would happen if the USA was taken over by fundamental Christianity.
- Little House In the Big Woods - The semi-fictional early childhood or a pioneer girl. It describes how early American settlers acquired food, made their own clothes and tools, and the dangers they faced.
- Nineteen Eighty Four - Another dark tale about what happens when evil people are allowed to be in charge.
Non-Fiction
- Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl - The diary of a Jewish girl in hiding during World War II.
- Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity - A biography of a woman struggling with sex addiction and a need to feel loved.
- A Short History of Nearly Everything - Gives a basic understanding of several fields of science, but is not dry.
- World Religions: Beliefs and Traditions From Around the Globe - Gives a basic understanding of all the world's major religions.
