The North American box.

Luigi's Mansion is a horror-themed action adventure video game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the GameCube on 2001-09-14. The game was a launch title for the GameCube and the first game in the Mario series on the platform.

In the game's story, Luigi receives a letter that he's won a free mansion in a contest he never entered (and he doesn't think this is a scam?!). He tells Mario to meet him at the address, but, when he arrives, he discovers it's haunted with ghosts who have kidnapped Mario! Luckily, he also meets Professor Elvin Gadd who has invented tools for capturing ghosts and gives some of them to Luigi so he can imprison the ghosts and save Mario.

Personal

By the time this game came out, I was no longer paying attention to new video game consoles or their games. I only had a few friends who owned a GameCube, saw very little of the console, and never even played a single game on one. However, no doubt because it was a launch title, the game kept popping up in the video game media I consumed. So, when I finally bought a computer that could emulate GameCube games at full speed, it was one of the first games for the platform that tried out.

Review

Good

  • The game utilizes classical ghost tropes effectively. They can be sucked up with vacuums, they are naughty little tricksters, they appear behind you and spook you, etc.
  • I like how Luigi emotes when he's frightened and how he hums to himself when he's scared.
  • The change when you capture the ghosts from the scary dark haunted rooms into warm inviting light rooms is a nice mechanic.
  • The various puzzles you need to solve in order to get the ghosts to reveal their hearts adds a much-appreciated cerebral element to the game.

Bad

  • Capturing the ghosts is tedious, most ghosts are just variations on what you fought in the training room, just with slightly more interesting environments and ghost abilities. This isn't really a mechanic to base an entire game on, and I was bored not even halfway through.
  • I like the game's main music theme, but that's about the only real song the game has.

Ugly

  • Nothing.
