The basic Mandelbrot set.

The Mandelbrot set is a set of numbers, usually graphed, which exhibit fractal behavior.

Personal

I remember seeing the Mandelbrot set as a pre-teen, possibly first in a math books in school, but also as an example problem in QuickBASIC. Although I found it interesting looking, I didn't have the slightest idea what I was looking at. In my 20s, I learned more about the set and even wrote a computer program to plot the set at a desired location and scale. The more I learn about it and other fractals, the more I love them.
