First edition hardcover.

My Father's Dragon is a children's book by Ruth Stiles Gannett, illustrated by Ruth Chrisman Gannett and published in 1948. The story describes the narrator's father hearing about a baby dragon that is being held prisoner on a far away island of beasts and his journey to the island to rescue it.

This book was gifted to my daughters at their baby shower. I first read it in the middle of the night across a few days while I was feeding them.

Status

My daughters own this book in a hardcover compilation along with Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. I have read it.

Review

— This section contains spoilers! —

Good

  • The story certainly has a lot of adventure and excitement.
  • I like that Elmer relies on his brains to outsmart his foes rather than violence.
  • The illustrations are quite good.

Bad

  • I got bored because it keeps repeating the same theme of outsmarting a dangerous foe.
  • The items Elmer takes with him to the island and how they're implemented are quite contrived.
  • In the end, all of the island's animals will be killed by crocodiles!

Ugly

  • Nothing.
