She Makes Me (Stormtrooper In Stilettoes) is my favorite track off of Queen's Sheer Heart Attack album. The song was recorded between July and September in 1974 at AIR, Rockfield, Trident, and Wessex Sound studios. The album was released on 1974-11-01.
The song was written and sung by guitarist Brian May, with John Deacon playing acoustic guitar. The song's finale features what May referred to as "New York nightmare sounds", which include NYC police vehicle sirens and deep-breathing sounds which accompany the closing bars.
This is one of my favorite Brian May songs, not only for its far-away mystical sound, but also for the lyrics that are both romantic and portentous of an inevitable breakup. The lyric "I know the day I leave her, I'd love her still" resonated with me as a teenager because when I heard it I thought of my high school girlfriend whom I was sure I would eventually break up with, yet continue to love.
I've read people say that Brian could have written this song about his mother, which is rather fitting; sort of a "leaving home" tune.
I still don't really understand the meaning of the subtitle "Stormtrooper In Stilettoes". It obviously has nothing to do with Star Wars (which didn't appear until 1977), so it's probably a reference to the World War I German troopers trained for assaulting trenches. To picture one wearing stilettos is comical, but I don't understand how that applies to the song.
Lyrics
I love, she makes me She is my heart She is my love She is my love I know you're jealous of her She makes me need She is my love She is my love Who knows who she'll make me As I lie in her cocoon But the world will surely heal my ills I'm warm and terrified She makes me so I know the day I leave her I'd love her still She is my love She is my love Who knows where my dreams will end I'll follow as they grow But the world will know How long I'll take And if I'm very slow She makes me so She is my love She is my love
