Super Mario Bros. 3: Instruction Booklet is the video game manual for Super Mario Bros. 3, a platformer video game made by Nintendo. The game was first published in Japan on the Famicom on 1988-10-23, and later in the USA on the Nintendo Entertainment System on 1990-02-12. The book gives detailed information about player character's movement, power-ups, and monsters, and cartoon illustrations of each. Unfortunately, the authors and illustrators are not credited, although Yoichi Kotabe appears to be the artist of all the illustrations.

Finished1990.

My brother got a new boxed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 shortly after it was released in 1990, and, while he was playing it, I would often read the manual. Over the years, I've read the manual dozens of times. I still have the original manual that came with it, though the cover is missing, and it's in pretty bad shape. I also have a later revision.

Review

Overall:

Rating-5.svg

Good

  • The manual is entirely in color and fully illustrated with paintings, drawings, and screenshots covering all of the game's items, monsters, and characters. All these visuals really help bring the game to life.
  • An in-depth explanation is given for all of the game's controls and functions, again with accompanying illustrations. Far more than would be expected for a typical manual and it's certainly appreciated.
  • The translucent screenshots of the later worlds and hints toward later perils adds an air of mystery to the game.

Bad

  • The manual incorrectly refers to Lakitu's cloud by its Japanese name, "Jugem's cloud"
  • The speech bubbles of the Koopalings rarely point to their mouths.

Ugly

  • Nothing.
