The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young is a documentary which debuted on debuted on 2014-10-26 which details the Barkley Marathons, an ultramarathon across rugged Tennessee wilderness. The race is about 130 miles long and about 60,000 feet in elevation change in unmarked wilderness and must be completed within 60 hours. The race isn't marked, so it's easy for runners to get off track. Several books are placed at key points and participants are expected to tear out a specific page to prove they have made it to each checkpoint.

I saw the title card on Netflix and thought it looked cool, so I watched it. I really enjoyed it.

I don't own this film, but I have seen it twice.

Good

  • I think the documentary does a great job of conveying both the charm and the grueling difficulty of the race. You see the disfigured feet and legs of the runners and them crying out of disappointment when their bodies give out, but you also see them joking around and the look of fulfillment when they succeed in surpassing a personal best, or finishing the race all together.
