The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by Pink Floyd released on 1973-03-01 on vinyl. It is a concept album focusing on the strain people feel from birth to death which sometimes cause mental illness, particularly among performance artists like former band member Syd Barrett. The album went on to be one of the best selling albums in history.
In the 1990s, a rumor was popularized which claimed the album aligned with the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. The band denied any connection to the film, and numerous skeptics have pointed out similarities between music lyrics and film content are to be expected with any album and film combination simply due to the total number of possibilities.

My brother and sister were fans of Pink Floyd from our father, but I didn't have much interest in them when I was still a kid. However, the more I heard from this album, the more I liked it. I bought my own copy in the late 1990s or early 2000s and listened to it many time. I now really love the album and most of the other albums by Pink Floyd. I've also seen two visual productions of this album including an old-fashioned laser show.
In the late 1990s, I think while working at Kroger, I learned about the belief that it synced up with The Wizard of Oz, and, still very trusting of web sites in my youth subscribed to the idea. This may have led me to buying the album, or at least encouraged me to do so. I remember chatting with some friends I met through a Renaissance Festival about how genius a band had to be to not only make a fantastic album that stands on its own, but to also have it sync up with a film. However, I have since changed my mind on this topic and no longer think they're related at all.

Album Art
The album art, designed by Hipgnosis and George Hardie, depicts a beam of light refracting from a triangular prism which separates the visible light spectrum into a rainbow. The artists made a conscious decision to leave out indigo and instead jump from blue to violet.
