A thought experiment is hypothetical experiment designed to try and help discover a truth. Thought experiments are usually used when a real experiment cannot be conducted, either because they ask abstract questions, or because the necessary technology does not yet exist to perform the test. However, many thought experiments from the past that couldn't have been conducted have since been conducted with improved technology.
