VeraCrypt is a free open source encryption program developed by IDRIX, based on TrueCrypt, and first released on 2013-06-22. VeraCrypt can create encrypted storage areas where you can safely store sensitive files, encrypt drive partitions, and even entire drives. It supports the following encryption ciphers: AES, Serpent, Twofish, Camellia, and Kuznyechik, and can combine them for added security. It also supports the following cryptographic hash functions: RIPEMD-160, SHA-256, SHA-512, Streebog, and Whirlpool.

VeraCrypt was forked from TrueCrypt after it was abandoned, and has seen regular updates since. VeraCrypt can open TrueCrypt files, but it uses a new unique format to address potential flaws in TrueCrypt's design.

Personal

I used to use TrueCrypt for keeping all my banking, government, and password files encrypted, but, after it was abandoned, I switched to VeraCrypt.
