Title card.

Walking Home is a 2016 two-part documentary directed by Ryan Leighton about hiking the Appalachian Trail. It focuses on a father and son duo who walk the 2,200 mile trail from Georgia to Maine, but also includes the adventures of a couple other hikers as well.

Personal

This documentary came up in my YouTube feed in 2017, I think after I finished reading A Walk In the Woods. I was fascinated by it, and it certainly made hiking the Appalachian Trail seem very interesting to me.

Status

I don't own this film, but I have seen it multiple times.

Review

Good

  • The film does a great job at glamorizing the AT, so much that it made me want to hike it (though I probably never will).
  • There is beautiful video from all the most important landmarks as well as various native flora and fauna.
  • The film really emphasizes the bonding of family and friends that takes place along the trail.

Bad

  • After watching a lot of preparatory videos about hiking the AT, I realized that the documentary really glosses over the monotony of a 2,200 mile hike as well as the difficult conditions that often occur.

Ugly

  • Nothing.
