Wu Lung is a mahjong solitaire puzzle video game developed and published by CSJ Computersoft in 1987 for the Commodore 16 and Commodore 64. The game has the typical turtle layout, supports alternating 2-player versus mode. It is effectively a superior version of the Commodore port of Shanghai.

I was looking for a new mahjong solitaire game to play, I searched for some of the oldest releases on MobyGames and found this one.

Best Version: Commodore 16

Good

  • The game provided a better mahjong solitaire experience than Activision's port of Shanghai.
  • The two-player versus mode is a nice addition.

Bad

  • The graphics are pretty ugly and the monochromatic tiles makes it very difficult to tell the different symbols apart. Also, coloring the tiles differently to simulate layers is better then nothing, but it's a far cry from simulated 3D tiles, and the default color options do not have a high contrast. The Commodore 16 port is actually superior having more color options available.
  • The game was made with the Commodore 16 in mind, so the Commodore 64 port doesn't take advantage of the platform's better hardware.
  • The game deals out the tiles completely at random with no option to guarantee winnable layouts. This is how the game is traditionally played, but results in a lot more losses.
  • The game doesn't do much other than simulate the most basic form of mahjong solitaire, which isn't much.

Ugly

  • The game lacks sound entirely.
