Systemic bigotry, also called institutional discrimination, refers to bigotry that exists within a system so that, even if bigoted people were removed from the system, bigotry would still be experienced. The most frequently talked about forms of systemic bigotry are systemic racism and systemic sexism, but it also includes other forms of bigotry like systemic ageism, systemic ableism, etc.

Personal

I didn't learn about systemic bigotry until I was in my 30s. It never came up in grade school, not even in government or history classes. I also never heard about it in college, although I didn't take many classes were it would come up. When I did finally learn about it, I was initially opposed to the idea refusing to believe that a mindless system could be bigoted, but, over time, I began to accept the reality of it. I now see an important duty in identifying systemic bigotry and eliminating it. I find that using the bigoted building is a good way of introducing systemic bigotry to people.
