You Wouldn't Like Me is a Tegan and Sara song first released on 2004-09-14 as track 1 on the album So Jealous. It was later re-recorded for Still Jealous. The genre is pop indie pop with late-emo style and the lyrics focus on self-doubt and internal conflict arising from relationships.

The song was written by Tegan Quin. On the album recording, Tegan sings vocals and Sara Quin sings backup vocals. Instrumentation isn't described accurately on the album, but Tegan probably played acoustic guitar, Sara probably played electric guitar, Chris Carlson probably played bass, Matt Sharp probably played synthesizer, and Rob Chursinoff probably played drums.

Personal

This is my favorite song from So Jealous. There is something both simple and deep about the idea of how you would react to meeting yourself. There have been plenty of times in my life where I asked that question and was pretty sure I would be annoyed and disgusted if I met someone just like me. Other ideas presented in the song include the despair of being alone, "There's nothing to live for when I'm sleeping alone," the idea of breaking up just for artistic inspiration, "Do I cause new heartbreak to write a new broken song?" The lyrics at the end aren't very clear, "Sunshine is days away, I won't be saved, I know all the words." My take on this is it references the initial idea of breaking up for musical inspiration, and Tegan realizes that a breakup won't give her anything new because she already knows what heartbreak feels like, so she already knows all the words from it, and, while there's still time to be in love, she knows that it's going to take awhile before she's happy again, and, even then, she doesn't know if this love will last forever.

Musically, I like the the buildup in sound that occurs as the song progresses. It begins with just acoustic guitar, picks up synthesizer, electric guitar, then finally drums, bass, and more guitar. The synthesizer that plays throughout the song also gives it a nice vibe. The electric guitar on the final lyrics sounds great too.

Lyrics

There's a war inside of me,
Do I cause new heartbreak to write,
A new broken song?
Do I push it down or let it run me right into the ground?

I, I feel like, I wouldn't like me, if I met me.

Well, I can't stop talking for fear of listening to unwelcome sound.
And you haven't called me in weeks,
And, honestly, it's bringing me down.

Oh, I, I feel like, I wouldn't like me, if I met me.
I, I feel like, you wouldn't like me, if you met me.

And don't you worry there's still time.
Don't you worry there's still time.

There's nothing to live for when I'm sleeping alone.
And I watch the windows outside,
In hopes that the glare will bring you around.

I, I feel like, I wouldn't like me, if I met me.
I, I feel like, you wouldn't like me, if you met me.

So, don't you worry there's still time.
Don't you worry there's still time.
Don't you worry there's still time.
Don't you worry there's still time.

[Unintelligible backup]

Sunshine is days away, I won't be saved, I know all the words.
I can't say, that I'll love you forever.
Sunshine is days away, I won't be saved, I know all the words.
I won't say, that I'll love you forever.
